Just saw this today. It has been a rumor for a long time. But being both a die hard Suby fan and a lover of old school Toyota sports cars, I am really really hoping there is truth in this.
http://jalopnik.com/5309029/report-t...kyo-motor-show I doubt it will look that good in reality. But one can dream

All good things
![]() I just hope it stays RWD and, I can't believe I'm saying this, they let Toyota do the final design.

New update on this, official pictures were released today of the new Subota / Toyaru concept, right now being dubbed the FT-86. Apparently this is very very close to what the final version will look like and YES it is actually going into production mid-late 2010. All I can say is, when this thing hits dealers, I will be shining up the Lexus for trade...
It looks amazing. ![]() http://jalopnik.com/5375217/toyota-f...electedImage=1

a little more info i found on there
The Toyota FT-86 concept is the fruit of cooperation between Toyota Motor Company and Subaru, and as such will wear a common chassis and some degree of engine commonality, at the least a 2.0 liter, four cylinder boxer engine dubbed the "C-45 Boxer" and making between 200 and 250 HP will power the rear wheels through a manual six speed transmission, and get this — no hybrid system. Saints be praised. Perhaps most telling are the car's overall dimensions. At 163.7 inches long, 69.3 inches, a wheelbase of 101.2 inches, and 49.6 inches high, it's thankfully compact, smaller in length, width and height than the Nissan 370Z, and slightly longer in wheelbase. It's also the first car to wear Toyota's new swoopy styling with some gusto. Dare we say it, we actually like the look of it. It's... exciting, we're so confused here. The interior is obviously all show-car glam and may serve as direction, but we'll be shocked if there are many zippers on the production car's dash. We're men enough to admit that combined with the recently unveiled 2010 Toyota 4Runner, we're about to shed a tear over what looks to be the return of the old, fun AE86 sports coupe-building Toyota. should be a pretty fun car, good competition for the genesis

Yah, I am very excited for this. I am saving my pennies already. RWD layout with a boxer engine, I would be lying if I said I hadn't dreamed about this layout for awhile. I don't know if there is an official price yet, but rumors are putting it around 22-25k to start.

The profile isn't bad but I am iffy about the rear. My initial reaction is that it is cool though so yea. Needs a little more power to start I think. 250 so be the low end.

Yea. I guess we ARE spoiled. It is hard when there are people throwing money around that can make 550!
But honestly, it is hard not to want more when there are so many people with more. You just think, with only a little more money I could be doing this, or this, or that....

Damn, I don't mind 200HP if it only weighs 2400lbs! Balance is just as nice as power.

I COMPLETELY agree but with my car and many peoples' cars that isn't a possibility with stripping it. I would love a car that is 2400 lbs. You know, the new 2010 ford fiesta comes to the states and I believe that it is 2200 lbs. Something like that(built up of course) or an MR2 or a miata or some other light car would just be amazing to huck around corners.

Yah, the lightness in this car will be key. One can hope that if it is being fed by Subaru powerplants, that there will hopefully be a WRX motor sneaking in the line up some day. Unfortunately I don't think that is what they are going for with it.

i wish they would make this thing super light but seems like cars are only getting heavier these days and a car coming from factory under 3000lbs is becoming hard to find.

Not sure on the exact weight yet, but they are building this car as the second coming of the AE86 and they have been talking about lightweight being a key factor. Of course with safety and emissions standards being what they are these days, it will be interesting to see how light they can really go.

![]() Toyota FT-86 Concept - click above for high-res image gallery While sports car fans everywhere are waiting with bated breath for the new Toyota FT-86 to arrive from the Land of the Rising Sun, some of us are a little bit more excited about the car's Subaru cousin. Why is that, especially considering that the FT-86 appears to be kinda just what the doctor ordered (rear-wheel drive, 200 horsepower, light, cheap)? Well, for one thing, Subarus are all-wheel drive. And while rear-wheel driven sports cars definitely have there charms (earlier rumors even suggested that Fuji Heavy was even caving and going rear-drive with its version of the Toyobaru), there's really little in life as fun as blasting down a gravel road at a seemingly unsafe clip while kicking up mountainous clouds of dust. Plus, you know, rain and all that. Then there's the engine. Our pals at Inside Line are reporting that the Subaru iteration of the FT-86 will have more power - 250 hp according to them. Using Jeremy Clarkson-style logic, 250 hp is better than 200 hp. Because it's more. IL claims that the Toyobaru will use a version of the just-developed-for-the-FT-86 flat-four 2.0-liter engine - supposedly naturally aspirated like in the FT-86. But here's the thing - the smallest engine Subaru offers American consumers these days is a 2.5-liter boxer. And that motor, turbo-tuned for WRX duty, makes 265 hp (though we've driven it and we'd wager it kicks out a bit more than that). Why would Subaru put a smaller, weaker engine into a $30,000 coupe ($30,000 according to the IL article) than the motor they stick in the $25,000 WRX? Exactly -we don't think they would. Inside Line also says the Subaru version will be larger than the Toyota car because of a "stretched platform." We're not sure if that means longer or wider - or both - but we'd err on the side of longer, as in more backseat room. What we're looking at then, is a big-ish, AWD coupe with a lot of power. Can you say 2011 SVX? We knew you could. Gallery: Tokyo 2009: Toyota FT-86 Concept [Source: Inside Line]Rumormill: Subaru version of Toyota FT-86 to be bigger, get substantially more power, AWD originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 10:28:00 EST. Permalink | Email this | Comments More... so really this other car with AWD and possibly more HP would be more like a Subaru WRX pretty much then?!?! cool shit and another option in the market

Interesting that they mention the SVX, I haven't thought about that car in a damn long time. They were, and still are in my opinion, damn cool cars. Really be interesting to see what Suby gives us.
